His grandfather Kgama III was paramount chief (Kgosi) of the Bama-Ngwato, part of the Tswana people of the region. Kgama III had traveled to London in 1885, leading a delegation which asked for Crown protection to be given to Bechuanaland, foiling the empire building ambitions of Cecil Rhodes and the incursions of the Boers. Kgama III died in 1923 and the paramountcy briefly passed to his son Sekgoma II, who died two years later. At the age of 4, Seretse Khama effectively became Kgosi and his uncle Tshekedi Khama was made regent. Studying in Oxford and London Seretse Khama was educated in South Africa and graduated from Fort Hare College in 1944 with a Bachelors degree. In 1945 he left for England to study law—initially for a year at Balliol College, Oxford, and then at the Inner Temple, London. In June 1947, Seretse Khama first met Ruth Williams, a WAAF ambulance driver during World War II who was working as a clerk at Lloyds. Their marriage in September 1948 threw southern Africa into political turmoil. Repercussions of  Mixed Marriage The apartheid government in South Africa had banned interracial marriages and the marriage of a black chief to a British white woman was a problem. The British government feared that South Africa would invade Bechuanaland or that it would immediately move for full independence. This was particularly a concern for Britain because it was still heavily in debt after World War II. Britain could not afford to lose the mineral wealth of South Africa, especially gold and uranium (needed for Britains atomic bomb projects). Mixed Marriage Controversy Resolved Back in Bechuanaland, the regent Tshekedi, Khamas uncle, was annoyed. He attempted to disrupt the marriage and demanded that Seretse return home to have it annulled. Seretse came back immediately and was received by Tshekedi with the words, You Seretse, come here ruined by others, not by me. Seretse fought hard to persuade the Bama-Ngwato people of his continued suitability as chief. On June 21, 1949, at a Kgotla (a meeting of the elders) he was declared Kgosi and his new wife was warmly welcomed. Fit to Rule Seretse Khama returned to Britain to continue with his law studies, but he was met with a Parliamentary investigation into his suitability for the chieftaincy. While Bechuanaland was under its protection, Britain claimed the right to ratify any succession. Unfortunately for the British government, the investigations report concluded that Seretse was eminently fit to rule. The British subsequently suppressed the report for 30 years. Seretse and his wife were banished from Bechuanaland in 1950. Nationalist Hero Under international pressure for its apparent racism, Britain relented and allowed Seretse Khama and his wife to return to Bechuanaland in 1956. They could return on the condition that both he and his uncle renounced their claim to the chieftaincy. What the British did not expect was the political acclaim that six years of exile had given him back home. Seretse Khama was seen as a nationalist hero. In 1962 Seretse founded the Bechuanaland Democratic Party and campaigned for multi-racial reform. Elected Prime Minister High on Seretse Khamas agenda was a need for democratic self-government and he pushed the British authorities hard for independence. In 1965, the center of Bechuanaland government was moved from Mafikeng, South Africa, to the newly established capital of Gaborone. Seretse Khama was elected as Prime Minister. When the country achieved independence on September 30, 1966, Seretse became the first president of the Republic of Botswana. He was reelected twice and died in office in 1980. President of Botswana Seretse Khama used his influence with the countrys various ethnic groups and traditional chiefs to create a strong, democratic government. During his rule, Botswana had the most rapidly growing economy of the world (starting from a point of great poverty). The discovery of diamond deposits allowed the government to finance the creation of new social infrastructure. The countrys second major export resource, beef, allowed for the development of wealthy entrepreneurs. International Roles While in power, Seretse Khama refused to allow neighboring liberation movements to establish camps in Botswana but permitted transit to camps in Zambia. This resulted in several raids from South Africa and Rhodesia. Khama also played a prominent role in the negotiated transition from white minority rule in Rhodesia to multi-racial rule in Zimbabwe. He was also a key negotiator in the creation of the Southern African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC) which was launched in April 1980, shortly before his death. Death On July 13, 1980, Seretse Khama died in office of pancreatic cancer. He was buried in the Royal Cemetery. Quett Ketumile Joni Masire, his vice president, took office and served (with reelection) until March 1998. Legacy Botswana was a poor and internationally obscure country when Seretse Khama became its first post-colonial leader. At the time of his death, Khama had led Botswana to become more economically developed and increasingly democratic. It had become an important broker in Southern African politics. Since Seretse Khamas death, Botswanan politicians and cattle barons have begun to dominate the countrys economy, to the detriment of the working classes. The situation is more serious for the minority Bushman peoples, which form 6% of the countrys population, with pressure for land around the Okavango Delta increasing as cattle ranchers and mines move in. Equity This component of the sustainable development implies that fair distribution of resources and property rights, both within and between generations, is a central dimension of nearly all conceptions of sustainable development (Gausen, 2012). Therefore, it is important that Tesla should focus on the development in a gradual manner Prudence Most analysts and researches call for humility and prudence in the pursuit of sustainable development, given the massive uncertainty and unpredictability, nonlinear interaction between system components, unknown thresholds, and complex dynamics in ecological and social systems. It is important that Tesla should take a smart and prudent approach towards the sustainable development. Securit This component means that the sustainable development should ensure a safe and secure workplace for employees and other stakeholders (Karamitsios, 2013). Tesla must realize that it can achieve its vision of 2030 only when it has got the best talent in the market and the management has the support of various internal and external stakeholders of Tesla. One of the reports presents that: Organizational structure and sustainability vision Strategic engagement, including acknowledging the competitive status of the organization and studying its structure and communication systems, allows the corporation to gather invaluable knowledge that may assist the corporation in dealing with the particular campaign. Heightened scrutiny and corporate transparency expectations may be part of the reasons why for-profit companies like Tesla are paying closer attention to stakeholder interest. Corporations cannot expect to be successful without managing the relations with stakeholder groups are destined for failure (Boatnight, 2006). Attempts to conduct business as usual would be met with resistance from stakeholders if their interest were not a part of the organizations master plan. Stakeholders and future organization There are two points that would impact the relationship of stakeholders with the future organization of Tesla. The first one is that the stakeholders are concerned with profits and building trust and the second one of that the loyalty is essential to managing stakeholders. Trust is a key issue when managing stakeholders and their interest. If the stakeholders have trust within the organization they will feel comfortable with bringing issues to the organization with the understanding that their issues will be heard. Loyalty between the stakeholder and the organization is a perishable trait that will diminish if either organization takes the other party for granted. The other point raised during in the current business environment is the importance of making a profit for the stakeholders. This is an important issue because in for profit organizations making a profit is the most important concern that all stakeholders have in common. When organizations openly address profit status and m aintain loyalty with stakeholders, it is easy to manage other concerns because organization is making profits for the stakeholders and they trust they organization. If the stakeholder loose trust and the organizations is not making profits the relationship will incur stress and this may results in long term problems. Stakeholder conflict management and sustainability vision It is highly possible that the view of different stakeholders would not match to a single point of sustainability vision. Therefore, the leaders of Tesla must have the plan to avoid all the conflict and bring management towards a common vision and sustainability goals that could be achieved by 2030. Stakeholders have varied requirements and goals that tend to conflict (Boutelle, 2004). In order to determine the level of influence of each stakeholder an analysis of each stakeholder should be completed. Boutelle (2004) labels four main areas that each stakeholder can fall into based upon a stakeholder analysis grid: 1.High influence, High interest, 2.Low interest, High interest, 3.High influence, Low interest, and 4.Low influence, Low interest. Using the grid to isolate the level of interest and influence each stakeholder possess will help pre-empt any objections that may arise to a given project. This type of pro-action will reduce conflict and assist in the development of projects th at can be seen as beneficial to all stakeholders. Although all stakeholders will never be fully satisfied this grid isolates those whose influence is of paramount importance (Hepburn, 2014). Having those stakeholders that are strong in influence in agreement can bridge any gaps that may exist and reduce opposition. This type of conflict management creates a win-win scenario and helps in the creation of long-term plans for the benefit of all. When it comes to conflicting situations, people who have already experienced the problem will have a more direct insight into what the problem is and how to solve it. During a stakeholders conflict, it is important to make sure that each of the stakeholders which are having conflicting viewpoints be called to a meeting in order to find a solution. During the meeting a person in charge will attempt to help each party communicate their viewpoints and the reasoning behind the way they think, believe and act (Raven, 2012). The best way of communicating with stakeholders who ideas don't align with the organizations is to attempt to refocus the stakeholders on the organization's vision. Management or leadership must listen to the stakeholders and figure out where the conflicts originated from and begin to repair the relationship. For-profit organizations will always have to deal with stakeholders with conflicting ideas. Taran and Betts (2015) explored a theory using proactive matching and advocacy strategies to improve relationships between organizations and stakeholders who are at odds with each other. Taran and Betts (2015) also stated the importance of establishing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities and must align with the interest and concerns of stakeholder's organization. Organizations have several stakeholders and managing the interest of all of these stakeholders can be overwhelming. However, for-profit organizations must resolve these issues due to the effect this situation may have on the bottom line and if left unresolved the organization may incur financial losses from it. Silent stakeholders and Tesla By "silent stakeholders" it is meant that the stakeholder has a significant interest in the organization but no voice or power.For Tesla silent stakeholders are the set of customers that wants to focus on sustainable development, want to buy the Tesla car, but they do not have any say in the working of the organization. For Tesla, the silent stakeholders also include the particular group of advocates that are concerned about the damage done to the environment when the car is disposed. There are serious concerns that the battery and the engine of the cars can cause serious environmental damages and it could be a serious bottleneck to the sustainable development practices of Tesla. Therefore, it is important that Tesla should focus on the way car is disposed at the end of the life. By maintaining clarity organizational leaders will be proactive in addressing stakeholder interests and conflicts by developing plans to mitigate these conflicts and built trust with stakeholders. In conflicting or turbulent situations organizational leaders should provide stakeholders with insight into the reasoning behind certain decisions so that their attitudes can be reflect ive of the importance of maintaining specific organizational objectives. Working with stakeholders to achieve organizational success is imperative and in the best interest of all parties. Conclusion The above paper discusses the sustainability vision of Tesla for 2030. It is expected that Tesla would be able to achieve its goals and objectives as the end consumers have started to use the electric cars so that they can make a difference towards the society and the environment. The book, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, is about an African man named Okonkwo, who lives in Umuofia, a village in Nigeria. Okonkwo was, to his people, a great man. He had proved himself many a time to be the successful man that everyone expected him to be. However, Okonkwo gets himself exiled by killing a clansman, who happened to be Obguefi Ezeudus son. Ezeudu was a great elder, very famous in the village and was also very powerful. The vile act of killing a fellow clansman just furthered the conflict that arose in the story, the arrival and takeover of the missionaries, and complicated the story. Okonkwo fled to his mothers land for seven years, away from the European missionaries spreading Christianity and taking over the land. We all read about the men and their titles, but what about the women? What about their importance to the village? I noticed that the women arent trusted as much as the men are. The gwomen are treated like untrustworthy creatures, who are not even trusted enough to go out for a few days without people breathing down their necks, as shown in both the aforementioned ceremony and the weddings that take place in the book. This brings me to another point: the women are sold off like bags of flour if one man has enough money. Their parents, m ainly the father, line up suitors and wait to see who could offer enough money to buy their daughter. I believe that is unfair and sexist toward women in general. There is this one part in the book, on page 117, where a girl, Akueke I believe, is being married off. Her father says, We are giving you our daughter today. She will be a good wife to you. She will bear you nine sons like the mother of our town. The sexist nature of the men in the village is shown clearly through that statement; the men refer the women of the village as child merely bearers, rather than the human beings they are. Another point is really more about the book in general. Achebe makes the women seem frightened and scared half of the time. Like when the egwugwu, which are people who masquerade as the ancestral spirits of the village, jumped into the crowd, the women, who were standing in a circle, jumped away, shrieking and screaming. Also, they are too frightened to go into Agbalas shrine for fear of being ki lled. They are portrayed as frightened creatures that cant fend for themselves. It seems, wherever the author is from, they taught him to think that women are always scared, which is biased because he only knows the women in his life and not the women around the world. So, in conclusion, the village of Umuofia is extremely sexist and Achebe didnt portray the importance of women enough in his piece of work, in my opinion. Women are basically what keep the society together. Women bear children, they care for said children when they are but babes, and they, being the patient creatures they are, teach the children what they need to know in order to become successful in the world. Most everyone relies on men to teach their own children, but the women, if my above statements are correct, are more capable of said task. The women are more mature than men also. They do not feel the need to compete with each other and waste time on superfluous activities; including gambling and such. Imagine a world with only men, it would be chaos; sexually and mentally frustrated men who eventually go crazy and kill one another, further endangering the human species; since men cannot bear children, and there would be no women to accomplish said task. See? Women are the foundation of our society. So, I ask you, what about the women? Where will the world be in a few years if females continue to be treated this way?

Return on Investment for Your Time I touched on this subject in another post earlier this year, but I want to hammer it here. You are a writer. Your time is torn between the keyboard and marketing yourself (not to mention your private life and whatever job is subsidizing your endeavors). Your time is money. Its ALWAYS money, so dont throw it away. So when you decide to get involved in any writing activity, you must be able to measure the return on investment. Whats it worth in terms of your annual income for you to get involved? Conferences Dont go without a mission. What will you bring home from this event? While youll make friends the purpose isnt social. Its business. What will you achieve here that makes it worth your money AND the time away from your writing? Is the conference too large for your taste? Do they provide answers to exact topics you need? Do you need an agent and do they provide one that fits your genre? Measure a conference from all angles before attending. Signings Will you be the only person at a poorly advertised event, selling three books in as many hours? Or is it well-advertised with expectations of good sales? Yes, it is controllable and predictable. If it isnt, someone isnt doing their job. Mass signings Theres a trend to gather as many authors as possible together and meet in some venue to sign. However, if there are as many authors as attendees, or even 30 authors and 200 attendees, will you sell enough books in that day (or two) that will justify the travel and cost? What are the genres represented? How much advertising has been done? How many books have sold at these events in the past? How much percentage of your sales do you have to pay for the privilege? Book Fairs These little events can net huge rewards, or reap nothing. Know the event. Keep it as local as possible, both diminishing expense and capitalizing on the homegrown author reputation. Classes What are the teachers credentials? What do previous students say about the class? How much is the fee and how much time will you have to invest? How will you specifically implement this class into your writing plans? Webinars What are the presenters credentials? What are they selling? Does the program fit into your schedule AND your writing plan? Be wary of impulse-to-buy deals. Book Clubs Believe it or not, these little gems often pay for themselves. Not only does the club choose your book (meaning sales to the members), but they may pay you an honorarium to attend. And since the members already read one of your books, you have the chance to promote your others in personand offer to autograph them while youre there! Ask the club what they expect to learn more. They love to talk about themselves. Advertising Know before purchasing advertising how others have fared. Are you better off paying for advertising or writing twenty guest blog posts and stealing your writing time? What is the net profit for each of your books so you can determine how many books you must sell to justify the expense. Dont play if you dont know. To know how to calculate your investment, to determine whether to participate or not, you do your homework, and thats where most writers fall short. They listen to whats said on Facebook or in chatrooms and dont actually research the events/activities themselves, thinking they dont have the time. There is no excuse for not doing your homework. Not with all the information readily at your fingertips as you sit so comfortably at your desk. It therefore follows that as social systems, both organizations and the people within them have to constantly adapt to complexity. Whether or not members of an organization learn to adapt to complexities is usually determined by how well members are integrated into the organization when they initially join it. The social process of joining an organization also known as â€Å"organizational socialisation† is important because it is a process in which the newcomer â€Å"acquires the attitudes, behaviour, and knowledge† necessary for participating as an â€Å"organization member†. Among the main socialization processes are: assimilation, civilisation, marginalisation, and professionalization. How an organization applies and deals with each of these processes in the socialising of newcomers depends on the mission and policies of the organization. This essay examines some of the applicable theories directing organizational choices in the complex socialisation process for newcomers. Two useful theories for guiding the socialisation process are psychological and socialisation theories. These theories are important for helping organizations learn the appropriate recruitment and retention skills in the socialization process (Allen, 2006, p. 237). Psychological theory focuses on perceptions of organizational expectations and how those expectations are altered upon entry and with respect to the newcomer’s experiences within the organization and the newcomer makes sense of those experiences (De Vos, Buyens, & Schalk, 2003, p. 537). Psychological theory also narr ows down the perceptions and how experiences alter perceptions by focusing on the experiences of gender groups (Robbins & Judge 2009, p. 45). Sociological theories such as social exchange theory argue that within an organization there is an: ..on-going, dynamic relationship between people as a series of interactions in which actors exchange resources guided by rules of exchange, such as social norms (Korte, 2009, p. 289). In other words, sociological theories inform of the processes in which a newcomer learns the social ordering of the organization via experiences and interactions after entering an organization. According to Allen (2006) employee turnover for organizations occurs more frequently among newcomers (p. 237). Unfortunately, this is problematic because, organizations typically invest a great deal of resources in the recruitment, and training of new employees and with the high turnover among newcomers, organizations have very little opportunities to realize a return on tho se investments (Allen, 2006, p. 237). Together sociological and psychological theories of organizational socialization inform that the socialization process commences before the newcomer enters the organization and that the socialization experience can have an impact on the newcomers decision to remain within the organization (Taormina, 1997, p. 29). It therefore follows that how an organization chooses to influence the socialization of a newcomer is very important and might even be relevant at the recruitment stage. For instance, perceptions of gender inequality in the work place such as in Wal-Mart where women are under-represented in its workforce might influence organizational change in attempting to increase the organization’s appeal to the female workforce (Boxall & Pucell, 2011, p. 14). In this regard, it would be necessary to change practices and policies within an organization that will facilitate the professionalization of women and thereby alter preconceived notion s of gender inequality by practices and policies that significantly alter the newcomer’s â€Å"anticipatory socialisation process† (Ongiti, 2011, p. 78). During the mid-1600’s England was a Christian dominated nation; the colonies, however, were mainly Puritans. When Sir Edmond Andros took over a Puritan church in Boston for Anglican worship, the Puritans believed this was done to break their power and authority. The Puritan church in New England was almost entirely separated from the state, except that they taxed the residents for the church’s support. The churches in New England had no temporal power, unlike the church of England. Many seaport towns like Marble head and Gloucester, became more religious as time pasted. This show of religious freedom was a way in which the colonies had religious toleration and differed from the Christian church in England. Unlike the well-defined social classes of England, the colonies had a streamline class structure, which gave individuals the chance to rise on the social latter. New settlers living on the coast could become rich by fishing and selling what they caught. If fishing was not a settler’s strong point, then they could try their hand at farming. Getting the land to farm on was the easy part. The ‘head right’ system gave each male 50 acres, and 50 acres to each indentured servant he might bring over. England could not do this because England so defined the social classes and they did not have enough land that they could give to every male and his indentured servant. In a similar economic revolution, the colonies out grew their mercantile relationship with England and developed their own expanding capitalist  system. The idea of a set amount of wealth in the world and that if one were to become wealthy, he or she had to take from someone who is already wealthy, is basically what mercantilism means. The colonies did not believe this idea in America. They believed that no matter who you were, if you had a good idea for making money you could do so, and without having to take it from someone else. This capitalistic spirit made many men very prosperous, unlike England who tried to force colonial ships to stop at England before they deliver their cargo. This would take money from the colonists and put it in the pockets of England. However, it did not work because the colonies figured out ways to make the raw materials on their ships into useable goods at the colonies themselves instead of at England. The colonies broadened the notion of liberty and self-government far beyond what England had ever envisioned. Through the years certain anomalies occurred, as colonial governments furthered themselves from the government of England. The governors of the colonies got power and certain prerogatives that the King had lost; the assembly of a colony got powers, particularly with respect to appointments, which Parliament had yet to gain. England was too preoccupied by the struggle between Parliament and Stuart Kings, to perfect effective imperial control over the colonies in America. The separation from England by the colonies in America took many years, but ultimately gave the colonists a real sense of freedom. Through small steps like, capitalism, self-government, and a fluid class structure, the colonies slowly, but surely, gained their independence from England. These changes in religion, economics, politics, and social structure illustrate this Americanization of the transplanted Europeans.
